May is Youth Service month. Youth is close to my heart. For many years I was involved in the Dutch multi-district for Youth exchanges. I never got to go on youth exchange with Rotary but, at 15, I traveled by myself to visit family in Canada. I stayed with them for 3 weeks. When I was back home I was a changed person. For the first time in my life I experienced real freedom and no fear. The experience is still with me and I am very sensitive to the lack of any kind of freedom and the hurt it causes.

Dear readers, Membership and New Club Development The RI theme for August is Membership and New Club Development, and this is something we need to continue to work on because attracting new members is vital to our club and to Rotary clubs all around the world. This raises the question “who are potential members?” I hope to assist our members in bringing new members to the club and therefore I am happy to announce that the Strategic Plan will be in place soon. The proposal and request for feedback will be send shortly. On August 17, Osbert will update us and we can discuss the plan. It will have guidelines for new membership candidates and in the meantime we continue to be open to new members. New Club Development is also part of the Strategic Plan and I, as president, have suggested some changes is our meeting schedules. Please check our website and Facebook for more information on upcoming gatherings.

The True Value of Rotary Fellowships Through The International Hosting and Traveling Fellowship, Dave and Wendy, D5080 Rotarians from British Columbia, Canada, connected with REOW President Elly Scheepers and her husband Frank. Dave and Wendy spent some nights in Frank and Elly’s guest room. They toured the neighborhood, enjoyed each other's company, shared Rotary stories, and learned about cultural differences. New friendships were built.

| Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Liberia, and unofficially in countries like Brazil and the Philippines. It is also observed in the Dutch town of Leiden and the Australian territory of Norfolk Island. It began as a day of giving thanks for the blessings of the harvest and the preceding year (Similarly named harvest festival holidays occur throughout the world during autumn, including in Germany and Japan.). Thanksgiving is celebrated on the 2nd Monday of October in Canada, on the 4th Thursday of November in the US, and around the same time of the year in other places. Although Thanksgiving has historical roots in religious and cultural traditions, it has long been celebrated as a secular holiday. |

| Backpacks and School Supplies for Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. In September 2021, at the beginning of the school year, we delivered 50 backpacks and school supplies to second-grade students of the Amelia Wilkes Ceseña Elementary School located in Cuatro De Marzo neighborhood in Cabo. This was led by Rotary Eclub of One World and the Principal and staff from the school. The project has been so successful that we decided to do it again in September 2023. |
