The village school at Zomay D.A/A.R.S Basic in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region in Ghana does not have sufficient reading materials for its classrooms in the primary grades (KG 1to Primary 6). This leaves the students at a disadvantage in developing the reading skills they need for success in secondary school and beyond. Many families in the village are not financially able to provide books for their children, or to provide separate tutoring in reading, as most of them are peasant farmers with little formal education.
The project provided books and other materials for 9 classrooms to serve a total of 324 students in the first year, and additional students as books are re-used for several years.
REOW member Dela Quarcoo Bedzra initiated the project and was assisted by REOW members Amina Sammo and Richard Otoo. All three are residents of Ghana.
