A Look Back at October and Toward November -
Rotary Foundation Month

First, I would like to look back on October, when worldwide RI worked on creating awareness of polio.

REOW heard from our member Susan about her experience of participating in a National Immunization Day (NID) in India with other D5240 Rotarians, and the need for us to continue contributing to Polio Plus so the job of eradicating this horrible disease can be completed.

I attended a district meeting of D4905 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where we discussed the facts about eradicating polio in times when people are less interested in vaccinations. More and more people are against the major immunizations. We cannot force people, but we can continue to communicate of the importance of good public health worldwide.

Luckily individual Rotarians also take action to generate money for eradicating Polio. An Argentinian lady will walk 1 million steps in the Camino de Santiago in Spain next year. We can sponsor her with one dollar per step. I can only express my admiration for the initiative and wish her success.

Closer to my home is the initiative to buy End Polio tulips. The yellow and red flowers will blossom in the Dutch gardens. All by all,  October was an important month for Polio Awareness.

For many REOW members, October was a month of travels. Several of our members travelled to Ghana to support projects and meet our members who live there. While others of us travelled to other places and met Rotarians. Please check out our posts on FB, Instagram, and WhatsApp for details. The year theme (re) connect was very well executed, I must say!

In November We draw attention to  what I call the bank of Rotary, the Rotary Foundation. TRF is the financial institution that provides the financial support of all RI Global and District Grants projects. I am looking forward to learning more about it.

With love from your president,
Elly Scheepers
